School Feeding Program

The Cup of Uji school feeding program provides daily nutritious porridge (Uji) to
selected public primary schools across Kenya. The program’s goal is to fight short-term hunger for learners in designated schools while also advancing their education. Since the government does not provide a feeding program in most schools, Cup of Uji is feeding 10,000 learners daily and for free in 2023. The project aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of Zero Hunger, No Poverty, and Quality Education. Accountability for the feeding project is guaranteed through quarterly progress reports and its feeding model is elaborate.

Cup of Uji offers porridge supplies (porridge flour and sugar) to selected schools under the management of the school’s administration. The porridge is prepared and served to all learners by the school cooks. It is provided at no cost to the learners, save for the fact that the school administration charges them for payment of cooks. The feeding program is monitored and evaluated at the start and middle of the school term. In addition, impromptu visits are made to schools to guarantee the quality and hygiene of the porridge. The supplies for daily consumption in schools are determined by the school’s population.

Cup of Uji relies on in-kind or monetary donations from abled individuals, foundations, donor organizations and corporates hence its sustainability is dependent on the availability of porridge supplies/ funds. The feeding program begins with the monthly delivery of porridge supplies to selected schools. After three weeks, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officers make their first impromptu visit to verify that the schools are using the required number of porridge supplies and storing them properly. The visits also entail surveying the learners for feedback on the porridge given. After six weeks, all of the selected schools undergo a mid-term review, which includes stock inventory taking,
porridge quality and health assurance, and completing questionnaires among random learners in each class. The organization publishes an annual report on how funds have been utilized.
